Vision

A public education system in which every learner is treated as fully human: curious, capable, and deserving of dignity. Schools should be grounded in democratic public life rather than market logic, with rigorous learning emerging from inquiry, relationships, and community rather than compliance and standardized metrics. Teachers should be trusted as professionals, students treated as intellectual partners, and education defended as a public good rather than a commodity.

Mission

Modern Teacher documents, analyzes, and challenges the forces shaping public education—from privatization and venture philanthropy to educational technology, surveillance, and managerial reform—while developing and defending forms of teaching rooted in inquiry, teacher agency, human relationships, and serious intellectual work.

The site brings together critical commentary, classroom-based inquiry, teacher reflection, and research in defense of public education and democratic control over schooling.
